Justicia rizzinii

Recently saw this small herbaceous shrub in full
bloom(early March) at the Huntington Botanic Garden,
simply covered in bloom with yellow and orange
flowers, blooming mightily in the full shade of Coast
Live Oaks. It would appear hardy enough to use here
in the San Francisco Bay Area as well, (it comes from
Brazil), but isn't seen here. The late fall into
spring bloom would seem to make it an excellent
candidate for the winter blooming garden. Is there
something about this plant that is too good to be
true?

At the very least, I know it does well in southern
California, and have brought back several plants to
try in my garden in Berkeley. A fellow California
Horticultural Society member(Kristin Yanker Hansen)
grows this in Danville, Ca., but I don't know if it
freezes back and regrows in her area(it gets down to
-6C/21F in her area), or if she grows it as a
container plant with protection. She is the local
member who collects malvaceae, and also really puts
subtropical summer heat loving plants to the winter
cold stress test, with completely different conditions
to cool and mild Berkeley just 12 miles away.

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone growing this!

Just getting the first buds opening on the Pincushion
Proteas in the garden, looking to be an excellent year
for them, tons of buds!
