Your file was 774kB and was probably a huge un-edited graphic from a

I would like to endorse this. We have a nominal 57K dial-up connection (actual transfer speeds average 45k) and huge unrequested photos are most unwelcome, as we pay an exorbitant rate for time-on-line if we exceed our allotment.

Most digital cameras do take pictures at a very large file size, and it is essential - for most purposes - to edit this down before attaching pictures to an email. I aim to reduce any picture I send to my friends to less than 100k (commonly 40-60k). This is about 600-800 pixels to the longest side. Even the most basic editing programs (such as come "bundled" with cameras and scanners) offers the facility to resize a picture.

At 600-800 pixels (long side), a picture fits comfortably on a monitor screen, and is easy to see and appreciate. Larger file sizes cannot be displayed all at once, and by the time you have scrolled up and down, backwards and forwards, to see it all, you lose all sense of the whole picture - "you can't see the wood for the trees" as the saying goes!
