Ethnobotanical References

Hi all. I am working on a volunteer project for a new botanical garden in San
Luis Obispo, California, USA. The garden is 150 acres and has a master plan
but no large-scale development yet. The theme will be the 5 Mediterranean
areas. I have offered to try and locate written sources of the ethnobotany of
the native peoples of those 5 areas for use by the garden association in
developing interpretive materials.
I pretty much have California, USA, down but was wondering if any of you could
refer me to sources for the other 4 areas. I'm not quite sure how to approach
the Mediterranean area itself given the complexity of cultures there. Any
thoughts, hints or referrals to books, etc., would be much appreciated by
myself and the garden staff.
By the way, the site seems to me to be a terrific one and the founding people
seem to intent on creating a major new botanical garden there. It could be
very nice.
This is my first post and I hope this seems clear.
Thanks,
Brent Wilcox
