I've been interested to see the grevillea thread
over the last few days..........I am in the South-West of Western Australia. The
grevilleas affiliated with the "Robyn Gordon" types are derived from a
Queensland species, Grevillea banksii hybridised with a Western Australian
species, G. bipinnatifida [native to my region]. These are referred to in
Australia as "sub-tropical hybrids" and are not regarded as hardy to cold
temperatures, reaching their full potential in climates which experience mild to
no frosts.
The grevilleas affiliated to G. rosmarinifolia, G.
juniperina, G. victoriae, G.whiteana and G alpina are much more hardy to
cold. The Poorinda hybrids such as Constance originate in Victoria and are
usually hardy. Some others which should be worth a try include Splendour,
Scarlet Sprite, and Pink Lady.
As a quick, rather generalized rule of
thumb...........the bigger the flowers, the less hardy the plant!
Margaret.
