Re: compost

Well, I do compost .....a lot. But, I live on a ranch and my neighbors
live a good mile or two away. So no complaints about bad smells. In the
beginning I just dug a hole and threw misc. leaves, kitchen scraps, tomato
harvest left overs etc. onto the pile. Turning it occasionally and
watering it occasionally. It really was a bit of an after thought rather
than a concentrated effort. And it was a great success.
And then I got a new pup. Her name is Suzie, but her real name is
Trouble! No way could I toss left-overs anywhere but what she would carry
it off to her favorite stash. I find the most interesting items in her
different hide aways. Half chewed, sprinkler heads, whole gallon pots,
some with my plant still half in it. sticks, some metal things I can't
identify, she seems to like metal. Probably something lacking in her diet.
So, I have purchased a rather nice compost container, black, round with
an easy to remove lid and that seems to work pretty well. Haven't noticed
any bad odors but do have flying insects if I do not add enough dry leaves
or dirt. I am not careful about sizes of apples, tomatoes, potatoes, just
kind of chop them up as I add them with a shovel. Anyway, this container
is the way I am able to recycle and also keep Suzie from destroying even my
garbage.
