The day this message arrived, I received a visit from someone whose dog
had been given an anti-arthritis drug to "clear the toxins" after it had
Leukaemia, and died, could I help? A bit difficult under the
circumstances, however I suggested taking the corpse to a properly
qualified practitioner for a PM with a view to instituting legal action
against the snake oil vendor who had prescribed the original drug.
"Can't" he said, "I have had the dog cremated" Easy enough to say
people as stupid as that shouldn't be allowed to keep a dog, but when
one (or I suppose, one's dog) has cancer, one is inclined to take any
unqualified advice and to go round nibbling at anything in the garden
and the more plants you have, the more likely you are to poison yourself
in your desperation. I am still wondering about all the Withania I
chewed. Personally I would be very hesitant indeed to take Aloe in any
form for Diarrhoea brought on by cancer therapy as its juice is
notoriously laxative and indeed grooms were warned about giving it to
horses at the beginning of the nineteenth century. A Chinese
practitioner gave me some licorice compounds when I was on radiotherapy
and darn near turned me insideout. Of course, as a herb grower, I should
have known better but as I say, anyone on the conventional "slash, burn
and poison" therapies will try anything. The best and safest course is
to avoid any herbal preparations, the ancient Greeks reckoned the only
herbs of value in cancer therapies were those that were powerful enough
to kill a man and had to be used under the strictest supervision and in
any case just because one plant will benefit one patient, it doesn't
mean that it won't have an adverse effect on the person in the next bed.
I sell Aloes and am therefore all for their promotion but in this case,
I say don't go near the stuff
