Dear Nan,
  We have had good luck reducing the rat population with the Rat Zapper that we bought at Grangetto's  near you. This is a big problem for us because the rattlesnakes will come in the yard to get them. There is nothing more disconcerting than to be weeding and have a snake nearby! I have had 7 rattlesnakes in 7 years and have never been bitten but don't want to push my luck.
