In NZ, electric
power companies often attached a sleeve
of galvanised flat
iron around 60-70 cm deep (2 - 2"6")
tight
around older wooden power poles to prevent possums
(extreme pest in
this country) from climbing up & causing
havoc by shorting
out the lines!!! Not so common now,
as wooden poles
are mostly replaced by concrete ones,
but I imagine there
are still plenty of back country roads
where they still
exist.
Might this be a
possibility for your fig tree?
Of course, power
poles don't increase in girth, as a tree
does, and are
also a tad more regular in shape!!!!
