This will probably work, IF the fig branches are far enough apart from other trees and fences to prevent jumping rats from getting in - you can get aluminum or galvanized sheets, or flashing (used for roof edges and chimneys) in rolls at buidlding supply stores. You would probly need at least a 16 inch wide strip on the trunk.
