In a similar location (45 minutes to an hour of hot p.m. sun) I've had success with crocosmias, forsythia, santolinas, bearded iris, wallflowers, hardy fuchsias (very drought tolerant, despite appearances), tulips/crocus/narcissus, lunarias, cannas -- none are rare or "special", but tough plants. Hmm.. also pansies/violas, hesperis, arums, callas, clarkias, costmary, daylillies, geraniums and pelargoniums .... but this list of 'successes' leaves off the many other species I killed through trial & error :). Good luck, and don't give up!

PS: Thought of a few others: snapdragons, alstoemerias, calochortus, that lemon-scented Ribes...
