I was also thinking about your predicament-what was throwing me off was
the deciduous "ash" which is not a particularly mediterranean tree....
I couldn't envision it with succulents, for instance.

Aside from the flower suggestions, if you might consider a grouping of
hardy little shrubs.  For instance, I saw the following combination the
other day in a landscaped area and it did have a "woodsy" appearance:
myrtle, juniper, lavender, euonymus, iris germanica, ebenus creticus,
hebe and clumps of white and blue daisies.  The plants were kept low, in
mounds.  To that I could add arbutus, cotoneaster, santolina, cistus,
box, variegated holly, cyclamen, star of Bethlehem, crocus, Sternburgia,
and asparagus fern as those could be found in the dry wooded areas in
nature.
