Here's a picture of what I was trying to describe.

I used rockwool for an experiment growing mums at UC
Davis for greenhouse mgmt class.  It was kinda nasty
to work with while dry.  It's kinda like fiberglass
insulation, itchy and irritating. Maybe they have
improved on it for household use.
