Susuan, Marilyn and All,
I have seen Eupatorium 'Gateway' with large globe shaped flowers on stalks
around five feet tall. I have also seen what is sold as "Gateway' look quite
different, taller, flat headed flower umbels, shorter and smaller flowers.
This is a native plant which grows in my area plentifully in swampy ditches.
I have two 'Gateway' plants purchased at different places and neither is much
showier than the native which grows closeby in our pond.
I first saw the hybrid in Vermont at the Northhill Garden. We were so
surprised at the size of the bloom. Someone could not help but ask, "what
are feeding that plant". A lot us bought 'Gateway' on the way home and I
don't know anyone who has a plant as spectacular as Northhill. The only
advice they could offer was that it improved if not moved or divided for many
years and that, of course, it needs lots of water.
If anyone notices catalog language that states they are handling the real
'Gateway' , I would like to know. The orginal 'Gateway' had rounded, globe
shaped immense blooms. Most of what is sold today looks pretty much like the
native which is also quite nice but not the hybrid 'Gateway'.
