Hi Cyndi,
Welcome from lurkdom!
I've been growing Phalaris arundinaceae var. picta (ribbon grass)
for about eight years now. I've found that it will spread rampantly
if the roots are allowed to spread, but it won't spread by seed
(actually, I've never observed it flowering).
The best solution that I've come up with to keep it in check is
to plant them in their containers (or larger ones). The plants
will never grow outside of the pot boundaries, although they will
choke themselves out over time if the pot isn't thinned on occasion.
Of course, this is all in zone 5b. I have no idea how they fare
elsewhere. :)
