Gosh Janet,
There was a large clump of white Helleborus x orientalis in my garden when I
moved here 24 years ago that I have never touched. I figure that clump is
at least 30 years old, several feet across and has hundreds of flowers every
winter. If they are supposed to decline, my clump hasn't heard about it -
and I'm not going to be the one to tell it! :)

Do they eventually need dividing because they become congested, less
floriferous, etc? I have a couple of clumps about 4 years old which have
been wonderful this year, probably nearly three feet across and very
free-flowering. I'm just wondering what happens eventually if they're
just left. Do they reach a certain size and stop spreading, do they fall
into decline - or do they simply carry on spreading slowly across the
garden?!!
