Chronic Wasting Disease (the deer version of Mad Cow disease) is spreading
throughout the United States. The DNR in WV denies it is in the deer herd
here, but a DNR employee told me confidentially that it is; they just don't
want to announce it and damage the hunting revenue. Once they do, control
of the herd will become even more unlikely since only taking of does
controls the population. And only doe hunters hunt for meat. Buck hunters
may eat an occasional tough old buck, but what they're after are trophy
antlers. I'd like to see an insurance company sue a DNR in some state.
Maybe that would force some real action.
