There was a furor here about a year ago involving three hunters who died of Creutzfeld-Jacob type symptoms. Creutzfeld-Jacob disease in humans is similar in pathology to Chronic Wasting Disease in deer. Researchers have not found a link, but are still pursuing it.
Wisconsin became the first state east of the Mississippi River to discover deer that tested positive for chronic wasting disease. Since then, wild deer have tested positive in Illinois. Positive elk on Minnesota game farms also have been found. And after the discovery in Wisconsin, positive deer were found in New Mexico, as well. The disease also continues to affect deer in western states such as Colorado and Wyoming.
To my knowledge, they have never discovered how this disease is tranmitted among the deer herd. Is it in the ground? Is it transmitted through the air or water? Could trying to eradicate 30,000 deer in the target zone actually advance the spread? So many questions, so few answers.
And it's too wet and foggy to be out in the garden today.
