Well....I've had a running battle with this plant ( Glechoma hederacea
[Nepeta hederacea]) for well over 20 years. In places where I am assiduous
about pulling it, I'm ahead. In places where I don't get around to pulling
it as soon as seen, it is winning.
Problem with it is that it will travel under things like cardboard topped
with mulch or newspapers topped with mulch. It will travel over mulch, no
matter how deep, but it is easier to pull out of deep mulch - I end up
rolling it up like a carpet in some places - doesn't kill it, but it does
make it whine a bit. Buried in the center of the compost heap, it does
make nice compost.
I have never tried Roundup or any other herbicide on it - the areas it
covers in the woods are just too vast for this. But, if you remove every
sprig you see, eventually it will get the idea it isn't wanted.
By all means, start your layering process now - it really, really
works....just make sure to keep your layers wet/damp so they will rot for
you.
