Re: Buddleia

Well Brenda, I am (among several I know) a queen of delayed
planting. <g> I have discovered the hard way that they really
do need to be planted. I suggest the real question is less how
they will survive the winter but is what will be the best for
them in the long run? Planting and moving, heeling in and
sinking the container are all viable options for surviving the
winter. I would not leave them in containers and either leave
them out or bring them in; it is unlikely they will survive
that.

If you think you will have the bed prepared in the spring of
next year, I'd most likely just sink the pot. There isn't a
whole lot more growing they will be doing this year. If you
think there is a chance that you won't have the bed ready until
summer or even autumn, I'd heel them in. If you are anything
like me (who never gets as much done as I think I can), you
should heel them in. Then they will have root room, can grow in
decent soil, get better nutrients and so on. Even though they
are late risers, the roots will continue to operate long before
the plant shows new growth.

Jaime, who determined that the elderberries she "heeled in" more
than 18 months ago will remain where they are. ;-)
