I am also in zone 5 and my experience says put it in the ground and mulch
heavily. I had good success planting a *Black Knight* at this time, last
year, overwintering it in the ground (sans pot), and moving it in very
early spring. I took someone from this list's advice and didn't prune it
'til early spring (when I moved it) and it's blooming now.
Caveat - we had a VERY mild winter last year . . . . that may have
contributed to its success????
