Advice needed!!!

HELP!!! I am planning some changes and new additions to my yard and need
some EXPERT advice. I have an area on the west side of my house that I would
like to develop, but can't get any thing to grow there. It is about 60' long
and 10' wide, but the problem is the pine trees that are every 4-5' apart. I
have tried raking and adding soil or just planting right into the ground, but
very few things are thriving. I have a few daylillies and some Monarda that
is growing, but producing little bloom. I have 2 hostas on the EAST side of
the pines that are doing well, as they are shaded by the trees, but I cant put
everything on the east side of the trees! This area get LOTS of hot afternoon
sun and because the pasture is on the other side of the fence, it gets no
shade. The pines are so tall the they dont shade the ground under them. Can
someone recommend perennials that can take this much sun and grow with pines?
Do I add soil or plant into existing ground?
I am in Memphis, zone 7, dull clay soil.
Thanks for your help.......Linda
