Advice needed!!! -Reply

Under some of my trees in similar conditions
(late, hot, afternoon sun) I have roses (yes,
really), they do need extra water. The hybrid
musks particularly do well in this condition. I
also have successfully growing there: oakleaf
hydrangea (hydrangea quercifolia), valerian
officinalis, japanese anemones, lamium,
epimedium, aronia (chokeberry), dayliles,
eupatorium (joe pye weekd), aconitum (monks
hood) dicentra (bleeding heart) autumn crocus
and spring crocus, bees balm, phystogia
(obedient plant), euphorbia (the shorter yellow
one) and climatis. New to this area this year is
viburnum tinus (or laurustins) and it seems to
be doing just fine. For the really tough areas
where the roots won't allow me to dig, I have
big pots (adds some height, too). I do water
regularly in the summer.

For some reason, I couldn't get hosta to grow
there, even though they are reputed to take dry
shade, and filipendula ulmaria and astilbe failed
miserably there as well. Definitely need more
moisture, even though the area is watered, it
dries out between quickly, the tree steals
everything.

Early in the season I can usually work in some
snap dragons and pansies which do well until it
gets really hot and dry. Alyssum will grow
there, too and petunias.
