RE: How to rid an area of grass?

I have done this, too.  You simply select the area of your future bed, and
then lay 8-12 sheets of newspaper over it (edges overlapping), weighing it
down with a nice heavy layer of mulch.  The complete lack of light prevents
germination of anything, and the grass will die.  The newspaper decomposes
totally, or at least enough to allow tilling or digging in.

The only drawback is that this method takes several months-- at least 6-- to
work well.  So you have to plan the bed and lay the paper down in the early
fall in order to be ready to dig things up in the spring.

As "insurance", I also sprayed the area with Round-Up a few days before
laying the paper down.
