Fern question

I have a problem with ferns in my backyard... They're everywhere!
Does anyone have any suggestions for containing them?
Not being a fern fanatic I'm not even sure what kind they are, but
they suddenly appear in the lawn, envelop my perennials, and pop up
in the middle of my paths.
I've read Gene's new article about ferns at www.munchkinnursery.com
in the Garden Clippin's section, but didn't see anything addressing my
specific situation. How can I keep these things contained away from my
other plants? It's to the point where everything else gets smothered
by these things...
