RE: aphids and mandevilla/ now mealy bugs

Al,
The heating of greenhouses is going to be a very expensive proposition for
everyone in the near future. I heat mine with Vornado electric heaters and
I'm sure you have read of the "electricity wars" that have started between
California and the pacific northwest. Estimates of 50% rate hikes and
intense conservation requirements are in the offing. Earlier this month we
were told to turn the heat down to 60 F, turn off the Xmas lights, don't use
hot water between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., etc. Then we found out that all the
electricity we hadn't used was sold to California. Folks came unglued!
This is going to be tantamount to the range wars of the old west before we
are done. Natural gas is estimated to go up 30% right now and more later.
Of course the price of heating oil has sky rocketed (up 40 cents/gal for me
since last winter) all over the US. That leaves propane - I haven't heard
of any impending problems there. Has anyone else? I suppose if I went to
all the expense to change over, that's about the time it would take off too.

Marilyn,

I have used Azatin a commercial product with neem. I have never had any
problem with any damage to the plants, I have even used stronger
concentrations than recommended.
If you use too strong of a spreader sticker this might cause problems.

It's unusual here to have 0 F -18 C temps by Christmas. We have been spoiled
by mild winters for past three years. Biggest worry now is the big jump in
natural gas prices. We quit raising poinsettias this year in anticipation of
the hikes. We expect 40 %to 50% increases before its all over.

I wish our winters were as mild as yours. I have a cousin in Seattle and
they really enjoy it there.
