RE: perennials DIGEST V3 #302 now plant sales

They now give you 'company name-bucks' when you purchase
items. Later in the year (around end of July- Aug) they pick a weekend
and you can use your 'bucks' on plants. Kind of rewards those that have
purchased from them rather than everyone, and helps deplete the
overstock before winter.

So marketing Doug... is this happening all around the industry or just
locally here? Started with one nursery and seems to be spreading around
in this neck of the woods.....
Some form of customer rebate is quite common in some nursery areas. There are also perennial clubs (buy a "membership" get discounts on a monthly plant plus a free one at the end of the year) and other marketing systems. Marketing is however not uniform across the Great Lake and Mid-Atlantic states (the ones I'm most familiar with) and the nature and demographics of the gc customer base determine how the marketing focus is set. In other words, the higher-end gc's tend not do this kind of thing. ;-)

I would also add the observation that many gc's actually grew their perennial sales this year. :-) If a gc or nursery did not turn higher numbers then this may be cause for concern. But that is not the problem for most of us - the problem for us is how do *we* get those perennials. :-) And, perhaps more importantly - how do we grow them once we do find a way to pay for this addiction. :-))
