Crocosmia 'Lucifer'

Anyone have experience growing Crocosmia 'Lucifer' in northern zones? I'm
in zone 3 and have some bulbs that I'd like to start indoors. When should I
start them? How deep should they be planted in the pots? How deep outdoors?

Also, I understand that Crocosmia, esp. 'Lucifer', has been known to
overwinter in zone 5 if well mulched. I'd like to try that here in a
sheltered microclimate by my foundation wall. Am I dreaming? Any advice?
