I have been using grasses, Japanese maples, liriope(black and lime green),
tiny Pieris, painted fern, hostas, and many other perennials in my pots for
the woods and sun loving ones such as cannas, lantana, Alocasias,a cute
orange flowered perennial called Dicliptera suberecta and heucheras. I take
the plants out of the glazed pots and put in some mulch for the winter but
the ones in the look like terracotta plastic I leave out. My winters are
not as cold as yours but some will make it. I like the layering effect of
the raised pots in with the in the ground plants plus they do not have to
compete with the tree roots in the shade.
Most of my fancier Japanese maples are left in the styrofoam pots all the
time. I will need to lift them and add more potting mix this season since
they are getting low in the pots.
