Re: [perennials] - perennials in containers

I've used a mix of perennials and annuals in pots for a couple of years - but I've always tucked them into the ground in the late fall. I'm in northern Michigan - zone 5 and had them in glazed containers that had to go into the garage for winter... I would guess that your best chance of overwintering would be in the foam pots...

I only do perennials as a mix with annuals in large pots (I'm guessing 16" - 20" diameter) and I plant very densely with almost no space between rootballs...

Some things I've liked:
- any of the dark leaved heucheras - this past summer I had a pale orange osteospermum growing with it - gorgeous combination.
- Hakonechloa - the flowing, cascading habit of this grass what great at the edge of a large container
- phlox paniculata - buy a small one in bud and it will add interest for a long time
- small hosta
- lamium - i especially like the yellow leaf varieties in containers- but the silver leaf is also nice
- dicentra - I think maybe 'King of Hearts' - blue foliage looks great, and in my cool climate it bloomed all season in the large mixed container
- variegated sweet flag (acorus) - a quick way to get some height
- carex 'The Beatles' or probably most other carex

I'll have to try nepeta and agastache!
