Home Depot isn't "causing" anything. The people causing the demise of
those smaller stores are the customers who go to one instead of the
other, and the stores who aren't providing what the customers want. Home
Depot actively competes with Lowe's; I doubt either pays any attention to
what the smaller stores are doing.

I don't know about Florida, but here in Detroit the Ace and TruValu
stores have lost customers because they're now devoting up to half their
stores to holiday items, groceries, and all sorts of other non-hardware
merchandise. It's a waste of time going to one of those stores looking
for a particular nail because you never know if that aisle will have
nails, toilet paper, or Christmas ornaments. Those few hardware stores
which have stuck to being hardware stores aren't having a problem.
Frank's has gone through many of the same "identity crisis" marketing
schemes over the years, and also to their detriment.
