My brother has a small retail bedding plant business and we close at 6:00 PM
Monday thru Wed. during the spring. Years ago evening sales were strong but
in the past ten years sales after 6 PM have become very slow in our area. I
blame it on the changing lifestyles, people have so much to do during the
evening hours. The only remedy we found is run a special Thursday evening
sale where plants are discounted. Then the volume picks up. So I guess
people are attracted by price, but we cannot have too many sales since it
would eat into profit.
There are a lot of things which bring success and failure to any business.
Some places like ourselves see no reason to have later hours if they are not
profitable. Profit is the name of the game in any business. WE disappointed
people this year with not retailing poinsettias, but we could not make any
money with rising gas bills.
Small businesses survive because they can offer that special touch and advice
which people need today. If you are small you have to sell service and
information, have plants labeled and have nice displays,
