I used to have an illustration of root depths of various plants that showed
tomato roots will extend over 20 feet into the soil if not impeded by
hardpan, etc.  Can't find it now to give you the source, unfortunately.
But the depth of tomato roots is one reason we water infrequently and
deeply in our area (sw Idaho).  Margaret L
