rhubarb

I know this isn't a vegetable list, but since rhubarb is
perennial, I thought I'd take a chance on asking you all my
question. Besides, mine is in the front yard and I use it
ornamentally (she write, as she hides the strawberry rhubarb
jam) . . .

I have a plain old rhubarb that I brought from my old house
4 years ago. The past three it has THRIVED. The spring of
this year saw it thriving as well. Usually 5 feet tall and
perhaps 10 feet across. Great for screening the hose and
the gas meter!

We had a wet early June and then massive heat (for
Wisconsin). We've had 12 days over 90 so far. The rhubarb
is planted on a corner with the white brick house in the
back, concrete sidewalk and asphalt driveway next to it. I
noticed the large leaves wilt and dry up first. Thought it
was the heat. Trimmed out all the dead and dying and now
the new stuff is withering and dying, too! I actually went
so far as to plant an umbrella over it in the heat of the
day, maybe giving it a respite from the heat. No luck.
It's well watered.

Should I cut it ALL back to the ground and hope for the best
or ??? I hate to lose it - it's beautiful AND sentimental,
but I hate to baby plants! Who ever thought I'd be babying
a rhubarb!??

Your help and thoughts are appreciated!
