Oh, nooooooo!  In the right spot this is really a lovely plant.  I have it in
front of one of the purple viticella clematis and the combination is a sight.
I don't know whether the yard rats (squirrels) will eat amaryllis bulbs, but
here they have even been gnawing on daffodil bulbs left out in the open--and
narcissus are supposed to be highly toxic.  I watched one one day grab one by
the remaining foliage and drag it up the side of a tree to munch on.  

If these amaryllis are lycoris (we call them "Naked Ladies" here in Cincinnati
because the stem and bloom come up without the foliage) then they are pretty
tough bulbs.  I dug some up and left them out on the ground and two of the
bulbs bloomed this week--very short stems, just a couple inches, but what a
tough bulb.  Still I wouldn't smother them in a plastic bag filled with
moisture.
