There's a great article in todays, 6/4/2000, Sunday's News and Record in Greensboro, NC. I had never heard of Chip Callaway, a local gardener whose creations have won him international acclaim. Callaway's gardens flank some of the grandest and most historically hefty homes in the country: The Alexander Graham Bell House in Washington, Stratford Hall, once the home of Gen. Robert E. Lee, in Stratford Va. and The Roper house, one of the outstanding mansions on The Battery in Charleston, SC.
Callaway's favorite public garden anywhere:
Sissinghurst in Kent, England
Favorite U.S. Public garden:
J.C. Raulston arboretum at N.C. State in Raleigh ("It's the only public garden where you can take a cutting.")
Favorite perennial:
baptisia
Favorite vine:
akebia
Favorite ground cover:
ardesia japonica
Favorite tree:
prunus mume, winter flowering apricot
Favorite shrub:
viburnum
Favorite cutting flower:
peony
Favorite herb:
