Here's the promised update on the purple leaf weigela. On this trip I
discovered there are two different ones. The first is Weigela Wine and
Roses - Weigela florida 'Alexandra'. The only tag was a name tag -
nothing giving any other info. Did find a couple of websites. The
picture in the second one is a little washed out. The color is very,
very dark burgundy with the veins remaining green. According to the
website this is very new to the states.

The second one is Weigela florida 'Java Red'. I don't know if Wine and
Roses and Java Red were different ages, but the Java Red was smaller and
had smaller leaves. The same dark burgundy, but suffused with green
resulting in a lighter effect. Both are gorgeous. I wish I had somewhere
to put them. The tag says 4' x 5', full sun, hardy to -30, and
purplish-red blooms. The first website above says 4 - 5' high for
'Alexandra'.
