Re: Verbascum-Mullein
We have mullein (verbascum thapsus - Flannel Mullein) growing wild
around this area. The plant is a biennial here. The first year is a tuft
of soft furry leaves much like Lambs Ear (stachys) but longer, wider and
not spreading. The second year the leaves get even bigger and then a
tall flowering stem comes up from the center. Around here it get 6-8'
usually in a single stalk although sometimes it splits to have two or
three stalks near the top. Then it blooms with rather small yellow
blooms. After blooming the seeds ripen and the plant dies. That stalk is
very strong and about 2" thick at the base. I sort of like them myself.
They will remain standing for a long time, several years sometimes. I
thought they may make good stakes for beans or even morning glorys!!
