Re: Hydrangeas

I grow Hydrangea 'Annabelle' here in Wisconsin, and it dies back to the ground
every winter. It definitely blooms on first year wood for me - there is no
second year wood. Yes, the flower heads are so large that usually they flop
over, so I have the shrub "girdled" (as Marge so aptly described) with a
grow-through arrangement of metal fencing and mesh. This year, I decided to cut
off the tiny flower buds at the terminal ends of the branches, as in the "Well
Tended Perennial Garden", to see if each tip would break new branches and form
more, but smaller flowers. So we'll see if I get smaller "mopheads" or no
flowers at all!
