I haven't noticed a brittle-ness in the roots -- if you mean like, say, lupines
or butterfly weed -- but I don't move them that often.   I moved a 5-year-old
plant when I moved here and it re-commenced blooming shortly after being
replanted.

Besides cutting back to regular waterings rather than constant moisture, it
might also be a good idea to cut back any stems to perhaps only 6" long.  Also,
you didn't mention what kind of soil you have; maybe there's not enough clay
(something one never considers saying!).
