Friends, I believe 'Brookside' is the improved 'Johnsons Blue' or least it
has been labeled as such to the greenhouse world.
Clematis x durandii is one of my favorites also. It survives my cold zone
4/5 garden and I have also moved it 2 times. The blue is wonderful and it
blooms most of the season.
The Clematis wilt is seldom fatal. If you cut back to green stem which may
be below the soil line it will respond with new growth. I had a Nellie
Moser which suffered from the dreaded wilt. This was a very mature plant
and would start the season with zest and then suddenly it would turn black.
I finally removed it because I didn't like the chore of cutting back and then
waiting for its recovery.
This usually does attack the lg blooming varieties. To help avoid this,
when planting, plant the crown of the clematis 2" below the soil line.
