Since you've spent quite a bit on 100 plants to smother the weeds, may I
make a further suggestion? Because you don't like to weed (and who really
does?) and these plants will be new and smallish, you may want to consider
using a biodegradable weed barrier. This can be placed on the ground where
you have tilled and when you are ready to place these new plants in the
ground, you can simply cut an 'X' through the fabric. This barrier is sold
by different companies, but I can remember seeing it in Gardener's Supply
magazine.
Benefits: few if any weeds to compete with your new plants. They simply
cannot grow though the barrier. From what I understand, this barrier will
slowly decompose through the season, allowing your new plants to spread
out. Others use black plastic and cover it with mulch for the same effect.
You might want to experiment to see which works best for you, but it would
be a shame to buy that many plants and have them fighting for their lives
through the weeds that will inevitably creep into your garden again.
