I'm in E. Central Illinois, so usually zone 5b. I've only had the plant
for two years now. The first year I didn't protect it all, so it died
back to the ground. This past year I placed a stake near the center
and made a "teepee" out of pine boughs around it. Things looked good
until we had that warm February followed by lots of snow; I think the
shock killed it back to the ground again. :(
I think it will become a container plant this summer and move into
the mud room (about 55 degrees) during the winter months.
I have it in WAY too large of a space right now anyhow. The new
perennial beds going in front and the pond in back will give me
lots of extra soil, so I think some of it will be going where the
Hydrangea was. Then I can plant something else that doesn't like
the climate here. :)
This year I'm hoping to get a lot more shade-loving perennials, as
most of my backyard is immersed in it. I was looking forward to my
three new hepatica, but it looks like the neighbor's cat dug them
all up. :(
Chris
