Re: Off-topic--Neighbor and privets

Thanks for all your advice. I think we must concede, because we are
listing our house for sale and nobody will buy property that has pending
legal issues. And they mean business: He's a building contractor, and
the first thing he did was to mark the property line in fluorescent
orange.
Forgot to mention that we live in coastal Connecticut, zone 6, next
to the New York border. That is, we live in Greenwich, where property
issues have an almost unrealistic importance.
ECPep, he's not saying that we trimmed too much; rather, that he
never gave permission for us to touch the hedge at all. You're right, I
should have had a witness. Who would've thought it necessary?
Dee Ann--excellent advice re taking pictures. Wish we could plant
the replacements directly on the property line, but they'll never be
satisfied with that.
The lawn man was just here. I asked him to please talk with the
neighbors, ask what they want done, get it in writing, and we'll pay for
it. He shook his head in disbelief and said, "It will cost you a fortune
to dig out and replant, and he still won't be satisfied because shrubs
won't be tall enough. He'll have to wait for them to grow. Don't get me
wrong, I'd love to have a $5,000 job, but they'd be taking advantage of
you. These privets will grow back in eight or nine months"
