Don,
If you think it won't survive would you consider a dry cold frame. A frame
with a free draining mix at ground level or slightly below keeps plants alive
for me.
If I am uncertain (and here there is a lot to cause uncertainty) I put the
plant into a frame slightly below ground level with a sandy mix. Ed fills
the frame with oak leaves after the first freeze and a great many tender
plants come through. Some I replant in the garden and others in containers.
I am able to keep the terrestrial orchid, bletilla. alive and thriving this
way. Again it cannot be a high water retaining mixture.
The frame is busy all summer with cuttings and perennial seedlings. It is a
valuable tool for the gardener.
