Hello Karen,
There are quite a few species clematis from the eastern part of the US
that will fit the bill for your Mom.
Clematis pitcheri has purple pitcher-shaped bells with recurred sepal
tips. Blooms in July through September. Mature size is about 6 to 10 feet.
While we are on the subject there are more that are even smaller. C.
fremontii from out toward the western plains only gets about 1 foot height.
European C. integrifolia gets to be about 2 1/2 to 3 feet and is a
non-climber. Comes in several colors of bell-shaped bloom.
