Jill, I agree that dappled or light shade would be better where you are. 
I've had the leaves sunburn in too much sun.  If it's dappled shade or
light shade (say afternoon shade and some morning sun) they should bloom
fine for you.

IMHO one really has to take the cultural advice on plant tags with a grain
of salt!  Especially here in the US with the huge range of conditions in
our gardens....there's no such thing as "one size fits all" and the tags
fail to tell us *where* they are giving the advice for!
