Well, that's more or less what I do. Only I am generally pretty late doing
this (despite yearly vows that I will do it sooner), so I just run the
twine under the flower head area to help support it......never get around
to doing it as the plants grow and am lucky if I get to it before the usual
bad storm that happens every year as they come into full flower flattens
them first.
My 5 plants grow in one bed, so I end up with - very roughly - three
stakes per plant for the outer ones and a couple or so in
between.....sturdy stakes are needed, pounded well in. Those huge luscious
flower heads are amazingly heavy when full of water. But the singles also
go down with heavy downpours of rain. After flowering, I remove the stakes
and twine and cut back the dead heads...looks better than just leaving the
stakes. Tried various cages and hoops over the years but none were really
tall enough so the stems just broke at the top of the hoop.
Since my peonies have to be content with only partial sun, may be why they
are prone to the flops after heavy rain....dunno...but I love them and put
up with it. Sad to say they are on the wane as we had a heat wave so they
only lasted about a week this year...but what a glorious week it was!
