Re: Plantings for Orienetal Poppies

Hi, Jerry...

Oriental poppies are one of the most reliable perennials here in my neck of
the woods, and I'm always experimenting with companions. Perennial Baby's
Breath (gypsophila) is okay, but only works well in a border with a rather
solid background (I wouldn't use it in an island bed). Asiatic lilies are
great, but they'll be gone before Fall. Asters are probably too invasive,
but garden mums might be just the ticket. My red/orange Oriental poppies
are all in beds devoted to orange/yellow/white/red, so this year I am
trying some Helenium autumnale 'Moorhein Beauty' with some. Actually, I
suspect that almost any late-blooming perennial would do. Oriental poppies
are one of the least-demanding perennials, and seem to share space happily
with other plants.
