If you want a nice catmint for the front of the border try 'Walkers Low.'
Plants grow around 10" tall and has a soft lavender blue flower color, plants
bloom almost all summer into fall.
'Blue Wonder' is another shorter one, growing around 12-15" tall and its make
a great edging plant too. I like it planted around shrubs. the flower color
is a soft blue and it responds well to trimming.
I like Nepeta and back during the days when I collected a lot of diffrent
plants I tried N. grandiflora this catmint did have large gray blue flowers
and it blooms all summer-but they are large plants. My clump grows 3.5 feet
tall and 6 feet wide. But I still like it.
Nepeta subsessilis has a diffrent appearance than the other species, To me
the foliage is very appealing and the attractive bright blue flowers are nice
too. The first set of plants I tried of this species must have been a
shorter clone because they grew only around 8-10" tall. But the form I am
offering for sale now is already 12-15" tall and we are still a few weeks
from them blooming.
Catnip or Nepeta cataria is a weed and I find it a very foul smelling plant
that makes me sick, I just hate the scent on my hands when I have to weed it
out of the flower beds. Last year someone threw a lot of it with seeds into
the compost pile and now I have to weed out seedlings out of some of the beds
we spread the compost on.
The lemon scented form of N. cataria is a nice smelling plant that comes more
or less true from seed, I do not know if the cats go wild over it But I enjoy
the scent.
