Hello Monica,
I love playing with color this way - I put a darker green cranes bill geranium with the silver of a alyssum Basket of Gold, and contrasted both color and shape. Behind them is a variegated iris ( no idea which one), with creamy margins. They bloom at different times, which adds spice to the mix.
The question is: What are you favorite combos of foliage? Do you combine the green-blues with the silvers only or the greens to the yellows only together? do ever the two palettes work together?
Are you looking for all low growers or mix of heights? Year round color?
I picture a bed that looks like an old Medieval Tapestry but can't quite figure out how.
My "D" (actually a spreading semi-oval, but DS once said it looked like a D, so....) was compared to a crazy quilt. It has a large range of foliage shapes, colors and textures. There are grasses, daylilies (natch), coral bells and a host of others. The comment was that it shouldn't work, but it does; just like a crazy quilt.
I move things in and out and around. Next years plans call for adding about 5 more feet to one end and to the diameter. I plan to either add a Diablo ninebark (doing more research), move in an existing sand cherry or a Japanese maple. I will also move in a dwarf viburnum, it needs a better spot to show off in. Because of the mixture of plants, I find this bed a great place to show off small flowered daylilies; flowers show up well, the foliage adds little exclamation points.
I am always looking for new foliage shapes and colors.... I find them more and more satisfying.
Cheryl
